AC not turning on and suspect a breaker issue? Learn how to spot a bad AC breaker, what you can safely check yourself, and when it’s time to call an electrician.

We recently got a call from a homeowner — let’s call her Sarah — who was pretty frustrated. Her AC had stopped working over the weekend. She did the right thing and called her home service plan provider first; their HVAC tech came out, looked over the air conditioner, and told her:
“The AC unit looks fine, but the breaker in your main panel is broken. It’s not sending the right voltage to start the system.”
Sarah described something we hear a lot: the AC breaker would flip on, but when she tried to turn it fully off, it would only go to a midpoint and get stuck there. The AC never powered on, and the breaker never felt like it was really on or off. That “stuck in the middle” breaker position is a big red flag.
If your AC won’t turn on and you suspect a breaker issue, here’s how we walk homeowners through spotting a bad breaker — and when it’s time to stop troubleshooting and call an electrician.
Your air conditioner pulls a lot of power, so most homes have a dedicated double-pole breaker for the outdoor condensing unit. Under normal conditions, that breaker has three basic states:
When a breaker trips from a real electrical problem, you’ll typically notice a distinct “click,” the handle moves, and the AC stops running. To reset, you usually have to push it fully OFF first, then back to ON.
In Sarah’s case, that’s not what was happening. Her breaker would move, but it wouldn’t lock into a true OFF position. That’s a sign not of a tripped breaker, but a mechanically failed breaker.

Make sure it’s not a whole-house power issue. If lights, oven, and other circuits work, the problem is likely specific to the AC circuit.
It’s usually a two-pole (double-wide) breaker labeled “A/C,” “Condensing Unit,” or “Air Conditioner.”
Firmly move the breaker handle fully to OFF, then firmly to ON. If it won’t go fully OFF, or feels like it’s stuck in the middle, stop there.
After a reset, step outside and see if the outdoor unit tries to start. No sound at all can point to a power issue like a failed breaker, but it can also be wiring or a disconnect problem — that’s where our testing equipment comes in.
What we don’t recommend: removing the panel cover or trying to pull and replace breakers yourself. Behind that cover are live parts that can be dangerous even if the main breaker is off.
In Sarah’s case, the HVAC technician had already checked the AC unit and the outdoor disconnect and didn’t find a problem there. He suspected the house panel breaker because the unit wasn’t getting the proper voltage.
