This one was a serious find. Hidden up in a Minneapolis attic, we uncovered knob and tube wiring that was powering more than half the home. We're talking old cloth-covered wire, original porcelain knobs, and zero grounding - the kind of setup that was standard a century ago but has no business running a modern household.
Here's the thing most people don't know: knob and tube isn't just outdated, it's dangerous the moment you add insulation over it. The system was designed to dissipate heat into open air. Bury it in blown-in or batt insulation and it has nowhere to go. That heat buildup is a real fire risk, and it's one of the main reasons insurance companies won't touch a home that still has it.
This job came to us through a referral from MN CEE - the Center for Energy and Environment. The homeowners were trying to do the right thing: insulate their home and electrify it for efficiency. But before any of that could happen, the old wiring had to go. We completed a full whole-home rewire so they could move forward safely, with modern grounded wiring throughout.
If you're in an older Minneapolis home and you spot porcelain knobs, cloth-covered wire, or that distinctive two-wire system without a ground, don't mess with it. Don't insulate over it. Don't assume it's fine just because the lights work. Get a licensed electrician in to assess it first.
We do this work regularly across the Twin Cities, and we know what to look for. Knob and tube replacement is a big job, but it's the kind of work that protects your home, your family, and your ability to upgrade down the road. #calldynasty
